TIFFIN, Ohio — A 23-year-old Shelby woman escaped from the Crosswaeh community-based correctional facility in Tiffin on April 5 after climbing a perimeter fence and fleeing in a waiting vehicle, according to a Seneca County Sheriff’s Office incident report obtained by TiffinOhio.net.
Mariah Corona scaled the fence at the southeast corner of the Crosswaeh female facility at 3091 S. State Route 100 at approximately 5:10 p.m., according to the report. A grey, mid-sized sedan pulled into the facility’s parking lot, drove to the northeast corner of the building, picked Corona up and exited the lot, traveling northbound on State Route 100 toward Tiffin.
The escape was captured on the facility’s surveillance cameras. Staff were unable to identify a license plate number on the vehicle.
Sgt. Richard Best of the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office responded to the facility and reviewed the surveillance footage, confirming that the individual on camera matched Corona’s description. Deputies searched the surrounding area but did not locate Corona or the vehicle.
Corona had been ordered into the Crosswaeh program by the Huron County Court of Common Pleas under Case No. CRI-2026-0094. The court’s judgment entry, stamped March 25, explicitly warned that leaving the facility without authorization would constitute a violation of R.C. 2921.34, Ohio’s escape statute, and would result in independent prosecution.
Corona signed the facility’s escape and AWOL prosecution policy on March 26 — 10 days before she climbed the fence.
According to the incident report, a packet prepared by Crosswaeh staff and provided to Sgt. Best included a copy of the judgment entry, the signed escape policy, a violation report authored by staff members Andrew Nye, Jacob Farley and Nancy Leeth, and surveillance still images showing Corona climbing the fence. The case has been referred to the Seneca County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Booking records obtained by TiffinOhio.net show Corona was previously arrested by Tiffin Police on Jan. 11 on a misdemeanor theft charge. She posted a $5,000 bond and was released Jan. 16. She was booked into the Seneca County Jail again on March 19 on a felony hold for another agency and was turned over to proper authority on March 20. A failure to appear conviction is also listed on her booking record in connection with the theft case.
The facility listed two contacts for Corona: a brother and a friend, both identified in the report. Neither had a valid driver’s license or a vehicle registered in their name, according to a records check conducted by Sgt. Best through LEADS. A message was left with Corona’s probation officer.
Crosswaeh is a community-based correctional facility operated by Oriana House, Inc., a private nonprofit community corrections and behavioral health agency. The campus on State Route 100 south of Tiffin houses separate male and female facilities. The female facility has a capacity of approximately 36 residents.
Corona’s escape is the fifth reported at the Crosswaeh campus since September 2024, according to incident reports obtained by TiffinOhio.net through a public records request filed with the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office. The four prior incidents involved individuals who failed to return after authorized leave for appointments or work. Corona’s case is the only one in which an individual physically breached the facility’s perimeter.
All five cases were charged under R.C. 2921.34 and referred to the Seneca County Prosecutor’s Office.
