The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public about a phone scam involving callers who falsely claim to be representatives of the sheriff’s office.

The scammers have been targeting community members, particularly those on probation, requesting personal information and money under the guise of being a “sergeant” or “deputy” from the office, according to a press release from Sheriff Fred Stevens.

The phone number (419) 318-6113, which appears on caller IDs, is being used by the scammers. When called back, the voicemail falsely claims that the caller is one of the sheriff’s office sergeants. The scammers inform individuals that they have a warrant and must pay money immediately over the phone to avoid arrest.

“This is a scam!” said Sheriff Stevens. “No legitimate law enforcement agency will call and ask for money over the phone or threaten arrest for non-payment.”

To protect yourself from these scams, follow these steps if you receive such a call:

  1. Hang up immediately.

  2. Search for the official phone number of the agency mentioned online and call it directly—redialing the number from the scam call may connect you back to the scammer.

  3. Verify the claim with the agency directly.

If you suspect you have been contacted by these scammers, or if you have provided any personal information, money, or gift cards, contact the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center at 419-447-3456, Option #4.
