The Humane Society of Seneca County took in 26 dogs in a single day this week, nearly doubling the number of dogs at its Tiffin shelter and prompting a one-day closure so staff could focus on the animals’ care.
The shelter announced the intake on its Facebook page, describing it as an emergency intake tied to a humane case. The group said the 26 dogs included 20 young puppies, one older puppy and five adult dogs. It did not release details about the case.
“This single intake has nearly doubled the number of dogs currently in our shelter,” the shelter wrote, adding that the sudden increase had “put a tremendous strain on our resources.”
To manage the influx, the shelter said it would close Thursday, July 16, so staff could concentrate on the health and welfare of the newly arrived animals. In a later post, the shelter said it would reopen at 2 p.m. Friday, July 17.
The shelter said it urgently needed wet and dry puppy food and welcomed monetary donations, which it said help cover veterinary care, vaccinations, deworming and medications for the incoming dogs.
The community response was quick. In a post thanking supporters, the shelter said residents had “responded quickly to ensure we are getting the supplies we need to take care of the animals,” and thanked the community “for stepping up in our time of need.” Photos posted by the shelter showed bags of donated dog and puppy food stacked inside the building.

Among the donors was American Plastics–Tiffin Division, a plastic injection-molding plant on South County Road 1 that manufactures storage shelving and totes. The shelter said the company donated puppy food and shelving, delivered the items, assembled the shelves and helped stock them. The shelter said it was grateful for the company’s help and for the community’s continued support.
