TIFFIN — A Fremont couple was killed Friday afternoon in a crash involving their motorcycle and a car west of Tiffin, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 2:50 p.m. Aug. 28 at the intersection of state Route 18 and County Road 26 in Hopewell Township, Seneca County.
According to a preliminary investigation by the patrol’s Norwalk Post, a 2015 Ford Taurus driven by Hadiya Batts, 29, of Tiffin, was traveling west on County Road 26 when Batts failed to yield at a posted stop sign at state Route 18.
The Taurus was then struck by a northwestbound 2015 Harley-Davidson Freewheeler operated by Ronald Kuyken, 74, of Fremont, investigators said.
Kuyken suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Susan Kuyken, 65, also of Fremont, was taken by ambulance to Mercy Health — Tiffin Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Batts suffered minor injuries and declined treatment at the scene, according to the patrol.
Investigators said Ronald and Susan Kuyken were not wearing helmets. Batts was wearing a seat belt.
The intersection and surrounding roadways were closed for approximately two hours while investigators and emergency crews worked at the scene.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, Bascom Fire Department, Tiffin EMS, Mercy Health Life Flight, John’s Towing, the Seneca County Coroner, Seneca County Department of Transportation and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The crash remains under investigation.
