TIFFIN, Ohio — A high-speed police pursuit that began in Tiffin early Monday ended with a rollover crash in Seneca County that ejected the vehicle’s sole occupant and prompted a request for Life Flight.
The incident began around 1:39 a.m. when Tiffin police were called to a disturbance in the 800 block of West Market Street involving a large group of people, according to police and sheriff’s dispatch records. One person involved left the scene before officers arrived, and a Nissan pickup was reported traveling west out of Tiffin at a high rate of speed.
Seneca County deputies picked up the pursuit as the truck continued through the county. Dispatch records show speeds climbing from about 90 mph to more than 100 mph, eventually reaching as high as 127 mph.
During the pursuit, deputies reported that the truck repeatedly ran stop signs, traveled in the wrong lane, went off the roadway and into fields, and at times turned its headlights off while continuing to flee. Deputies also attempted to deploy spike strips as additional law enforcement units, including Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers, responded.
Shortly after 2:10 a.m., the truck went off the roadway near County Road 27 and Township Road 134. Dispatch records indicate the vehicle struck two utility poles, continued moving and then rolled over.
Deputies reported that one male occupant had been ejected from the vehicle. He was described as unresponsive and experiencing agonal breathing, and Life Flight was requested. A sheriff’s drone was deployed to search the surrounding area for any additional occupants, but none were located.
A second drone deployment was later used to document the crash scene before the investigation was turned over to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Dispatch records identify the registered owner of the truck and later indicate that the injured occupant was confirmed to be the vehicle’s owner. TiffinOhio.net is not identifying him at this time pending formal confirmation from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The records do not establish the driver’s current medical condition, whether he was ultimately transported by Life Flight, whether impairment was confirmed or whether charges are expected.
