TIFFIN — A 60-year-old man was killed Wednesday night after being struck by a train in Seneca County, according to law enforcement records.

Seneca County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched around 8:28 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, to the area of 1525 W. County Road 42 after Norfolk Southern reported that a train had struck a pedestrian.

Deputies arriving at the scene reported evidence of the collision on the locomotive. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, with dispatch records listing his time of death as approximately 8:46 p.m.

The victim was Doak A. Pfaff, 60, of Port Clinton, according to a Seneca County law enforcement media summary and an obituary published by his family. The law enforcement record formally lists Pfaff as the victim in the railroad incident.

Pfaff was born in Port Clinton and had previously lived in Oak Harbor and Powell before returning to the Port Clinton area, according to his obituary.

Dispatch records show authorities worked with Ottawa County officials to notify Pfaff’s family following the collision. Ottawa County deputies made contact with relatives Wednesday night before Pfaff’s identity was publicly released.

Deputies, railroad personnel and the Seneca County coroner’s office remained involved in the response for several hours.

The available law enforcement records do not explain why Pfaff was on or near the railroad tracks before he was struck.

The investigation remains ongoing.
