TIFFIN, Ohio — Authorities have arrested a Fremont man in connection with the theft of a vehicle that was found on fire outside a Tiffin residence on Friday.

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a vehicle fire in the 5000 block of North State Route 53. Deputies, along with the Old Fort Fire Department, responded to the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze, preventing further damage.

Upon investigation, the vehicle was identified as a 2021 Kia Forte belonging to William Vance Jr. of Tiffin. The car had been reported stolen earlier from a residence on Wall Street. Investigators from the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office were called to assist, as initial findings suggested the fire may have been deliberately set.

Further inquiries led deputies, in coordination with the Tiffin Police Department, to arrest 38-year-old Austin T. Adams of Fremont. Adams is alleged to have taken the vehicle without the owner’s consent. He was arrested on charges of motor vehicle theft and is currently being held at the Seneca County Jail.

Sheriff Fredrick W. Stevens commended the teamwork between the Sheriff’s Office and the Tiffin Police Department in apprehending the suspect. “The immediate collaboration between our office and the Tiffin Police Department was instrumental in apprehending the suspect moments after the alleged arson, and we are now following up on the entire investigation with the State Fire Marshal’s Office. A job well done by all,” Sheriff Stevens said.

The investigation into the suspected arson is ongoing.
