A Bettsville man convicted of rape, sexual battery and attempted rape following investigations involving two women has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to an additional attempted-rape charge.
Seneca County Common Pleas Judge Steve Shuff sentenced Tyler J. Hossler on Tuesday, bringing an end to the criminal proceedings that began with his indictment in September 2025.
A Seneca County jury found Hossler guilty of rape, a first-degree felony; sexual battery, a third-degree felony; and attempted rape, a second-degree felony, on September 17. Before his sentencing, Hossler also pleaded guilty to a second attempted-rape charge that had been separated from the original trial.
The court imposed a mandatory seven-year prison term for rape and a three-year term for one attempted-rape conviction, to be served concurrently. An additional three-year term for the second attempted-rape conviction will run consecutively, bringing his total prison sentence to 10 years.
Fourth charge resolved through guilty plea
Hossler’s guilty plea resolved a charge that remained outstanding when TiffinOhio.net reported his jury convictions in September.
In March, the court granted a defense request to separate the fourth count, another attempted-rape charge, from the other three charges. A separate jury trial had been scheduled for September 21 and 22 but was postponed after the defense requested a continuance.
The September 17 verdict therefore resolved only three of the four charges in the indictment. Hossler’s subsequent guilty plea eliminated the need for another trial on the remaining attempted-rape count.
Following the jury’s verdict, the court revoked Hossler’s bond and ordered him into custody pending sentencing. He had previously been released after posting a $500,000 bond in October 2025.
Lifetime sex offender registration required
In addition to his prison sentence, Hossler must register as a Tier III sex offender for the remainder of his life.
Tier III is Ohio’s highest sex offender classification. Under state law, individuals in that classification must personally verify their registered addresses with the appropriate county sheriff every 90 days. The registration requirement continues for life.
The case originated with two separate investigations conducted by the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office after allegations that Hossler sexually assaulted two women. Those investigations resulted in a September 2025 indictment charging him with rape, sexual battery and two counts of attempted rape.
Hossler’s October 20 sentencing resolves all four felony charges brought against him in the original indictment.
