FREMONT, Ohio — An 86-year-old Fremont man was struck by a Norfolk Southern train while walking on a railroad trestle near the Miles Newton Bridge Sunday afternoon, according to preliminary findings released by Fremont police.
Police identified the man Monday as Gaspar G. Hinojosa, a Fremont resident.
Norfolk Southern reported Sunday that a pedestrian had been struck by a train on the railroad trestle adjacent to the Miles Newton Bridge. Emergency crews responded to the area and began searching for the person.
Responders located Hinojosa deceased in the Sandusky River at approximately 3 p.m.
“Preliminary findings indicate that Mr. Hinojosa was struck by the train while walking on the trestle,” Fremont Police Chief Derek Wensinger said in an updated media release Monday.
The Fremont Police and Fire departments, Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, Ballville Township Fire Department, Harris-Elmore Fire Department hovercraft, Sandusky Township Fire Department and Sandusky County Drone Team were involved in the response.
The Ottawa County Water Rescue/Dive Team and Toledo Fire Department Special Operations team were also dispatched but were canceled while en route, according to police.
The incident remains under investigation while authorities await reports from the Sandusky County Coroner.
