FREMONT, Ohio — Emergency crews recovered a body from the Sandusky River Sunday afternoon after Norfolk Southern Railway reported that a train may have struck a person near the Miles Newton Bridge in Fremont.
The incident was reported at approximately 1:50 p.m. near the railroad crossing at the bridge, according to a Sunday media release from Fremont Police Chief Derek Wensinger.
The Fremont Police Department, Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, Fremont Fire Department and Ballville Township Fire Department responded and searched the area.
Emergency personnel recovered a body from the Sandusky River at approximately 3 p.m., police said.
The Sandusky County Coroner’s Office was contacted. Authorities have not released the identity of the person.
Police also have not yet confirmed whether the person whose body was recovered was struck by the train or released additional circumstances surrounding the death.
Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
