FREMONT, Ohio — A Fremont City Schools teacher is accused of engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a minor student.

Fremont police arrested Alan “A.J.” Mehlow, 31, on Tuesday night on a charge of sexual battery, a third-degree felony, authorities said.

Mehlow was booked into the Sandusky County Jail and remains in custody on a $50,000 bond, according to court records. Fremont police chief Derek Wensinger said he anticipates additional charges after a full grand jury review of the case.

Fremont City Schools placed Mehlow on administrative leave in mid-January after allegations surfaced that he violated the district’s code of conduct.

Superintendent Denice Hirt said in a statement that Mehlow was instructed to stay away from school property and have no contact with the student or anyone associated with the student. Hirt confirmed Thursday with local outlet WTOL 11 that Mehlow teaches at Fremont Ross High School.

No further details were immediately available about the alleged relationship or the identity of the student. Authorities are expected to provide additional information once the grand jury review is completed.
