TIFFIN — A 60-year-old cyclist was airlifted to a Toledo hospital after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday night at the intersection of South Sandusky Street and Euclid Avenue, according to Tiffin police.

The crash occurred around 8 p.m. when Bruce G. Gibson was riding his bicycle northbound on the sidewalk and entered the intersection.

Paul Newland, 81, was driving westbound on Ella Street and proceeded through the intersection on a green light when his vehicle struck Gibson, police said.

Footage from a nearby residence confirmed Newland had the right of way. Investigators determined that Gibson, who was required to stop and yield before entering the crosswalk, crossed against the signal.

Police noted that Gibson was wearing a dark jacket and riding a bicycle that was not equipped with lights, as required by law for nighttime riding.

Gibson was initially treated at the scene by Tiffin Fire and Rescue before being transported to Tiffin Middle School, where a Life Flight helicopter airlifted him to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. His condition was not immediately available.

No citations have been issued, and the crash remains under investigation.

Police said preliminary findings indicate Newland was traveling lawfully through the intersection at the time of the collision.

“The Tiffin Police Department reminds all cyclists to follow traffic laws, use proper lighting when riding at night, and remain aware of their surroundings to ensure safety on the road,” said Chief David Pauly.
