TIFFIN, Ohio – John Kahler, who has served as an at-large councilmember for Tiffin City Council since January 2024, announced his resignation effective Sunday. Kahler, who chairs the council’s Law and Community Planning Committee, cited potential conflicts of interest with his private law practice as the reason for stepping down.
In a statement, Kahler explained that after extensive research and consultations with the Ohio Supreme Court Board of Professional Responsibility and the Ohio Ethics Commission, he determined that resigning would be the most ethical course of action.
“I have so enjoyed my time on City Council and the relationships that I have formed with all of the members. However, criminal defense has been my passion and profession for 28 years. I cannot simply give it up,” Kahler said. “I wish all my fellow Council members luck in the future and hope to continue my friendship with everyone I have served with over the past year.”
Kahler’s resignation leaves a vacancy on the council, which will be filled through an appointment process. The details and timeline for that process will be discussed in a future council meeting.
Mayor Lee Wilkinson praised Kahler’s service, saying, “John Kahler has been a dedicated and valued member of City Council whose wisdom, thoughtful approach, and commitment to the community have made a lasting impact. While his resignation is a loss for our team, I respect his decision to prioritize transparency and integrity. On behalf of the City of Tiffin, I thank John for his service and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
Council President Bridget Boyle echoed the sentiment, adding, “I have enjoyed working with John, and I believe he has brought a unique perspective to City Council. While it is sad to see him go, I completely understand his decision and hope him the best in his private practice.”
Kahler, a sixth-generation Tiffin resident, graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School in 1987, Miami University in 1991, and Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1996. While his role on City Council marked his first foray into public office, he has held leadership positions in several local organizations, including serving as president of the Seneca County Bar Association and the Bridges Academy Board.
Kahler and his wife, Jennifer, along with their daughter, Sagan, run Kahler & Kahler Law, LLC, a law practice based in Tiffin.
