Ohio State Highway Patrol investigates serious crash in Seneca County

REED TOWNSHIP, Ohio – The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Norwalk Post is investigating a serious crash involving a commercial vehicle and a pickup truck that occurred Friday around 6:43 p.m. on State Route 4 near State Route 269 in Reed Township, Seneca County.

According to preliminary reports, a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Stanlee Howell of Bucyrus, Ohio, was traveling northeast on State Route 4. As Howell attempted a left turn onto State Route 269, his vehicle was struck by a 2009 Peterbilt semi, operated by Robert Smith of Fostoria, Ohio, who was heading southwest on State Route 4.

Following the impact, both vehicles veered off the right side of the roadway, with the Peterbilt subsequently striking a nearby residence before coming to a stop.

Smith, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Bellevue Hospital by North Central EMS. Howell suffered serious injuries; his seatbelt status remains unknown. He was initially taken to Bellevue Hospital by North Central EMS before being airlifted to MetroHealth in Cleveland.

Multiple agencies assisted on the scene, including the Bellevue Fire Department, North Central EMS, Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, Huron County Sheriff’s Office, Interstate Towing, and Wilcox Towing.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
